People come to Carthage for the day. They leave in the evening for Tunis, or for Gammarth. It is the habit, and it comes down to one thing: there is almost nowhere on the hill to spend the night.
The archaeological site takes up much of the ground, and what remains is residential. There is no hotel seafront in Carthage, no row of façades. A few houses, a handful of addresses, and that is all.
What a night here changes
The site opens at eight. At that hour there is no one. The coaches arrive around ten and leave in the middle of the afternoon; in between, Byrsa belongs to the groups. Sleeping on the hill means having the two hours before and the two hours after.
In the evening the question no longer arises. The site closes, the hill empties, and the bay changes colour with no one watching.

The TGM, the suburban railway, serves Carthage from Tunis-Marine with several stops in the commune. Carthage-Hannibal is the closest to the Byrsa site.
What to look at before choosing
Where it sits in relation to the hill
Carthage is spread out. An address in Carthage-Salammbô, down by the water, and an address on Byrsa give neither the same view nor the same access to the site.
The season
From November to March the light is low and the air is clear: the best period for the view, the worst for swimming. July and August are hot on the hill, but the sea breeze rises in the late afternoon.
The number of rooms
Addresses in Carthage are small. That shows in service that recognises you on the second day, and in availability that closes early for spring weekends.
Villa Didon
Ten suites on the hill of Byrsa, above the Punic port. The house is more than a century old; it was restored rather than transformed. Each suite was drawn separately — no two repeat the same idea.
Breakfast is served at La Proue, facing the bay. The restaurant and the bar are open to outside visitors as well as residents.
